About Mary
Mary is a life-long educator who is passionate about the role of reading, particularly fiction, in helping develop more empathetic and democratically-engaged individuals. After many years of teaching in a variety of geographic and educational settings, she's now the Executive Director of The Children’s Book Bank in Toronto, an organization focused on providing free, fully accessible book ownership and literacy programs for children and families living in the city’s high priority neighborhoods.
Once for each thing. Just once; no more. And we too,
just once. And never again. But to have been
this once, completely, even if only once:
to have been at one with the earth, seems beyond undoing.
Rainer Marie Rilke
Why we love Mary
The Children's Book and Mary Ladky have inspired the ECHOage Co-Founders for over a decade. The simple idea that book ownership, not book borrowing, is something special, something valuable has touched us and made us passionate about raising as much money as possible for The Children's Book Bank. Every child on ECHOage who has chosen this cause has helped make it possible for a new reader and possibly a new writer to be born. Nothing could make us more proud.
