Diapers for Healthy Beginnings

Baby Love works to eliminate the diaper need faced by low income families in Toronto. We do this by sourcing and delivering tens of thousands of diapers every month to families living in poverty.   

Background:

Diapers are an essential part of child health. Yet over 100,000 low income families in Toronto cannot afford diapers for their babies and young children. 

Lack of diaper access has three major outcomes on children and their families: 

1. Increased infection rates and related health issues for infants who stay in dirty diapers;

2. Reduced access to available childcare resources for parental employment and school (which require children to arrive with diapers); and,

3. Reduced spending on other family essentials, including healthy food and housing

Access to diapers is low because they are surprisingly expensive; diapers are the fourth highest expenditure for families with young children, after housing, food and utilities. They tend to be more expensive for low income families who do not have the resources available to buy in bulk. And, with diaper prices rising over 10% in the last year, diapers are increasingly out of reach for too many families in Toronto. 

These organizations combine these tangible goods with high touch programming to meet the individual family’s needs, such as:

• Mental health support, 
• Parenting classes and early childhood education, 
• Economic security and income-earning opportunities, 
• Food security, and more.

Baby Love delivers diapers directly to registered charities in Toronto to distribute to families in need.
