Mission and Goals
The Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) supports grassroots, community-based organizations that are turning the tide of HIV/AIDS in Africa by providing care and support to women, orphans, grandmothers and people living with HIV and AIDS. Since 2003, we have funded more than 1100 initiatives with 300 community-based organizations in the 15 African countries hardest hit by the pandemic.
How Your Contribution Helps
These grassroots groups are the lifeline for their communities: with the support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation they provide counselling and education about HIV prevention, care and treatment; distribute food, medication and other necessities; reach the sick and vulnerable through home-based health care; help orphans and vulnerable children access education and work through their grief; and support grandmothers caring for their orphaned grandchildren.
They are women and men who live within the community and know, through everyday experience, when to provide food or medicine to a patient. Through their energy, commitment and compassion, they are changing the course of the pandemic. It is time to acknowledge that these grassroots organizations are creating an impact that no government in the region can do without. Winstone Zulu, Zambian AIDS Activist, 1964 - 2011
